- HARQ<br/>
- Channel state estimation (CQI) and dynamic rate adaptation<br/>
- Configurable radio resource scheduling algorithms (default set to RoundRobin as specified in 3GPP baseline configuration)<br/>
- IMT-Advanced compliant channel model (ITU-R document M.2135)</p>
<p>Also an ECMA-368 (WiMedia) simulation module was released with following characteristic:</p>
<p>The ECMA-368 standard, also known as the WiMedia standard is partly implemented into the WiMeMac module. This module uses the OpenWNS framework and focuses on selected properties of the medium access protocols conform to ECMA-368, mainly:</p>

<p>- DRP Negotiation (on demand)<br/>
- DRP Conflict Resolution<br/>
- Blocked or Random Reservation (number of blocks in DTP can be configured)</p>

<p>The ultra wideband (UWB) channel characteristics are considered by a data link level (DLL) mapping, taking also certain aspects of WiMedia’s channel coding into account, different Channel Models from IEEE 802.15.3 Task Group are selectable. <p>Besides field testing and mathematical analysis, simulation has become a key method in many research areas, including communication networks. Multiple simulation tools exist with different degrees of detail. System level network simulators aim to evaluate the performance of communication technologies in realistic multi-cellular system deployments. The Open Source Wireless Network Simulator (openWNS) is a system level simulator developed especially to analyze and improve wireless networks. It has been developed by the ComNets Research Group, which has almost 20 years of experience with wireless network modelling and simulation. The simulator has been published as open source under the Lesser General Public License (LGPL) allowing non-profit as well as commercial use of it for everybody who is interested.</p>

<p>The first ComNets openWNS Summer School is intended to bring people using openWNS together to exchange knowledge, share their experience and discuss problems. This way we hope to form a vivid network of openWNS developers willing to support each others work in an overall open source project. Tutorials will be held to introduce new, advanced functionalities of the simulator, including the IMT-Advanced Evaluation framework.</p>
<p>The event is intended for people already using openWNS, including those with a high level of experience and those that have just started work on this tool. A first test configuration for beamforming and Space Division Multiple Access (SDMA) has also been published.</p>
<p>IMT-Advanced Evaluation:<br/>

<p>IMT-Advanced Evaluation Methodology compliant scenarios for Urban Macro, Urban Micro, Rural Macro, Suburban Macro and Indoor Hotspot deployment scenarios have been published to evaluate WiMAX system performance. The scenario setup includes the node deployment, large-scale fading channel model, antenna characteristics and transceiver properties.</p>

<p>We were able to create a fully functional openWNS installation on a bootable USB stick. The minimum requirement is an empty USB stick with at least 8GB capacity. The Glue module is a wired data link layer demonstrating the usage of Functional Units (FUs). It uses Copper as PHY layer. Copper provides FIFO data transfer for a bus topology. It can be configured to use an arbitrary bit error distribution.</p>
<p>The TCP layer is still in experimental state. Included UDP module is working. TCP connection establishment works, Flow Control and ARQ still need review, testing and improvement.</p>
<p>New system tests for IP, Constanze traffic generator, TCP and Glue have been published. They can be used as example configurations for own simulations. IP tests include an example on how to setup tunneling. A Glue test shows how Functional Units can be used to model the behavior of a 802.11 MAC. Constanze tests include advanced stochastic traffic models like MMPP.</p>
<p>WiMAC module has been refactored. Work is still ongoing. There we had the opportunity to present openWNS to the research community. The paper I presented gives an overview of all the features currently available. I have attached the paper to the original post on openwns.org (use Reade More link below). The feedback was encouraging and people showed interest to try it out. We distributed LiveDVDs to let listeners quickly check out the tool. Aalborg itself was fun. We arrived there just before the childrens carnival celebration started but unfortunately had to leave just before the main festivities began.</p>
<p>So check out the paper. I think it gives a good overview of the simulation platform and simulation models and helps to get started with the simulator.</p>
